Never a Dull Moment!

If you are involved in pastoral ministry you may be overworked but life is never dull!

I started at Grace UMC officially July 1st.  So I’m just getting to know Grace and the Morningside neighorhood of Sioux City where our church is located.  Our closest neightbor is Morningside College.  We are so close we share a parking lot with the college.  Grace and Morningside College have a very long relationship and have been working together for many years.  If you aren’t familiar with Morningside College check out their webside at morningside.edu.

This weekend we have some very exciting things going on at Grace UMC.  I am having a wedding for a very nice couple in the church on Saturday afternoon and a Saturday worship service which we have every week at 5:30p.  Sunday morning I’m going to be blessed in sharing in the sacrament of baptism of a child in our church and also in Holy Communion.  As far as I’m concerned there is no better time of worship than when we can baptize someone into the body of Christ and then partake in the the holy mystery of Holy Communion together.  God is good! (All the time!)

Even with such a busy weekend I was confident that I had all my ducks in a row and was ready to go until I was reminded that Iowa is the center of the US political universe.

On Saturday President Obama will be speaking at Morningside College.  He will be at the college around the same time I’m having the wedding and worship services.  So I was a bit concerned that we might have parking issues.  But in conversastion with Morningside College we moved quickly to make sure that parking would be available both for the wedding and for those coming to see the President.

I had my first ever (probably last ever) meeting with a couple of very nice agents from the US Secret Service who came with the express purpose of making sure that nothing interferred with the activities of the church during the President’s visit.  We set up a plan for parking and the Secret Service and the Sioux City police will direct those coming to Grace Church into our lot from the Garretson Avenue entrance.  So if you are attending the wedding or worship service, please avoid Morningside Avenue as it may be closed and come in Garretson where you will be directed to park.   I am very pleased with how helpful and responsive both Morningside College and the Secret Service have been to seeing that the church’s needs are met during this historic event at the College.

As I’ve said, in the pastorate there is never a dull moment!

  1. Interesting story, Tim. When it rains, it pours! Glad to hear the Secret Service was so pleasant to work with. It is so easy to imagine it would be the other way around, with you having to conform to their requirements.
